Our mission is: “Preserving the Past, Illuminating the Present and Educating the Future.’ We are keepers of cultural identity. We view our museum as a classroom, our responsibility is as an educational facility, and our place in the community is immense. A challenge for both the present and future is the explosive evolution of technology. Smart phones, smart boards and laptops are common in even kindergarten classes. Enormous resources and information are moving from ink on paper to bytes in cyberspace. Digitizing the printed word and photos might create a virtual museum to be appreciated from an I-pad while waiting for a Doctor’s appointment.
We are privately funded. Therefore, our volunteers play a critical role. Docents guide visitors through the museum. Others will spend countless hours making the transfer from ink to a place on a hard drive. Other volunteers who visit class rooms and while there; show a child a rock, smile, and say, “this is a tool. It was used by a man more than a thousand years ago. Let me tell you how this toolmaker took the first steps that may allow you to go to Mars.”
